LETTING GO OF CONTROL: BLIND CONTOUR DRAWING

Wednesdays | April 21 | 1-2pm PT
All ages and skill levels

Blind contour drawing is more about the process of drawing than it’s about “getting it right.” In this class, students will have the choice to set up a still life or draw objects they’ve chosen. The object is to draw without looking down at the drawing and without picking up the pen/pencil. It’s about the process of seeing and connecting to the subject - almost like tracing it. The result is a fluid, slightly abstract, drawing whose outcome is often more interesting than a realistic drawing.

Supply List:
- Drawing paper
- Sketch paper
- Pens + Pencils (participants can choose to bring a variety of pencils (hard and soft leads) and pens (felt tip, brush pens, etc.))

Instructor’s Note: It is helpful to have an idea of what you want to draw. Bring objects, set up a still life, choose a photo from a magazine or one that you’ve taken, etc., so you’re prepared to jump right in.

Teaching Artist: Carrie Leeb

Virtual Drop-In: This program is a part of Virtual Drop-in Series. | By registering once, participants may attend all weekly session.

LETTING GO OF CONTROL:

WET ON WET WATERCOLOR - ABSTRACT COMPOSITION

Wednesdays | April 28 | 1-2pm PT
All ages and skill levels

More than any other painting medium, watercolor inherently has a mind of its own. The process of wet on wet watercolor is full of surprises. It’s about allowing the paint to lead us, not necessarily the other way around. The result is a beautiful combination of soft, feathered edges and colors flowing into each other. The focus of this class will be to experiment with the technique through abstract composition.

Supply List:
-
Watercolor paper
- Watercolor paints in tubes (your choice of colors)
- Small containers to mix paints (baby food jars or small takeout sauce containers)
- A variety of flat and round brushes
- Paper towels

Instructor’s Note: It’s not necessary, but it will be helpful to have an idea before class of shapes and compositions that you’re drawn to. Looking through books and magazines is a good place to start.

LETTING GO OF CONTROL: DRAWING WITH YOUR NON-DOMINANT HAND

Wednesdays | May 5 | 1-2pm PT
All ages and skill levels

How often have you heard people say, “I can’t draw. I’m not artistic,” as if being able to draw realistically is the benchmark to being creative? So not true! The beauty of drawing with your non-dominant hand is that expectations of perfection are out the door before you even start. That’s when the magic happens. You’ll be surprised to discover the beauty in imperfection (a Japanese term called Wabi Sabi), and how flaws and idiosyncrasies often make things much more interesting than something that’s “perfect.”

Beyond The Warp And Weft: The Enduring Legacy Of Bauhaus

Exhibition Dates: July 11 - August 30, 2019
Opening Reception: July 11th | 6-9pm
Curator: Hanna Regev

Launching a year-long inaugural program of contemporary exhibitions that celebrates Bauhaus at 100, Beyond the Warp and Weft explores the far-reaching impact of the Bauhaus ideas in the contemporary textile and weaving field.

The Bauhaus is known for converting the traditionally domestic craft into an art form and pioneering models for thinking and making in textiles and weaving that function across material, technical, and theoretical borderlines. The result is a multifaceted practice that draws on craft, art, design, architecture and science.

Beyond the Warp and Weft brings together 17 artists to highlight ways in which they continue to break new grounds by combining traditional craft techniques with digital processes and interdisciplinary strategies and to chart the future trajectory of the practice.

With a particular emphasis on the diversity of the working processes and innovative use of materials, the exhibition presents a stylistically diverse selection of works that combine hand weaving, textile, sound, science, sculpture and site-specific installation.

Throughout the year, four exhibitions will examine the enduring legacy of the Bauhaus in weaving and textile design, interaction of color, photography, and activism in the arts, with a particular emphasis on the way contemporary art practices have evolved with the innovations in materials and technology.

VIRTUAL DROP-IN: GEOMETRIC SERIES IN WATERCOLOR

Wednesdays | October 6 | 1-2pm PT
All ages and skill levels

In this workshop we will paint a series of geometric objects with watercolor: cubes, pyramids, cylinders. We will study how light interacts with these objects, using the technique of layering color washes to render shadow and light. We will also look at how to use painter’s tape to create defined edges and lines. Participants will paint from the still life I set up on camera, or from an object selected from their own home. A cup makes a good cylinder, a box makes a good cube.

By painting these objects in a series we will create a pleasing array of many perspectives on a single subject.

This workshop is a part of two-session Watercolor Constructions Series on October 6 and October 13.

Materials:
- Watercolor or mixed media paper
- Drawing pencil and eraser
- Watercolor paints (tray or tubes)
- Painter’s tape or Washi tape (washi tape is a craft tape that you can get at most art/craft stores, it peels off of paper easily and can be reused)
- Brushes (any size, ideally at one in the #8 - #12 range)
- Water containers
- Painter’s rag or paper towel

VIRTUAL DROP-IN: COLORFUL ARCHITECTURES IN WATERCOLOR

Wednesdays | October 13 | 1-2pm PT
All ages and skill levels

This workshop will explore an abstract method for depicting our own homes and neighborhoods with watercolor. We will learn to paint colorful washes in geometric shapes - rectangles, triangles, and squares - to suggest the places that hold meaning to us. The gouache and watercolor paintings of Paul Klee will serve as a launching point to take inspiration. Participants can choose to paint from observation and use the house in which they sit as subject material, or paint from memory, choosing to depict a special place from childhood, for example.

Some of the techniques we will learn are how to paint and layer washes of watercolor and how to use painters’ tape to create defined edges and lines.

This workshop is a part of two-session Watercolor Constructions Series on October 6 and October 13.

Materials:
- Watercolor or mixed media paper
- Drawing pencil and eraser
- Watercolor paints (tray or tubes)
- Painter’s tape or Washi tape (washi tape is a craft tape that you can get at most art/craft stores, it peels off of paper easily and can be reused)

Homage to the Wheel of Color

Exhibition Dates: November 7, 2019- January 24, 2020
Opening: November 7 | 6-8pm
Curator: Hanna Regev

Ruth’s Table is pleased to present Homage to the Wheel of Color exhibition, second in a series of four that celebrate the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus.

In Homage to the Wheel of Color, fourteen Bay Area artists continue the legacy of Bauhaus by delving into studies and experimentation with color theories, helping us gain new insights and appreciation of the complex phenomenon of color.

Drawing on the theories of the greatest color thinkers, the exhibition examines color’s relationship with shape, material, light, and sound, highlighting its importance in enhancing, altering and guiding the viewer’s experience.

From intricate chromatic paintings that tangle the illusion of two-dimensional space to light sculptures that use color as an encoding, manipulating large data sets to create eye-popping optical effects, the exhibition showcases a spectrum of effort to use color as a tool to play with perception and illusion.

Cake decorating is open to interpretation, with ideas to be presented in class for inspiration. Participants can choose to make a somewhat realistic-looking cake or choose to make a fantasy cake and decorate it in any way you’d like. Participants will end up with a fun piece of sculpture that will brighten up your home, be a great conversation starter, and maybe, just maybe, cure your sweet tooth.

OPENING RECEPTION | AGENTS OF CHANGE: MARGARET FABRIZIO AND KAWANDIS

Thursday, September 15 | 6-8pm PT

Ruth's Table is thrilled to invite you to join us for our opening night celebration of Agents of Change: Margaret Fabrizio and Kawandis.

About the Exhibition

Agents of Change exhibition is a celebration of selected works from Margaret Fabrizio, an internationally acclaimed mixed-media quilt and fiber artist. The exhibition focuses on a collection of work created over the last decade that is inspired by the Kawandi style of quilting, a technique developed by the Siddis culture that Fabrizio learned from during her travels in India. Using methods and materials characteristic of Kawandi quilts, each work is a unique interpretation that captures Fabrizio’s explorations of color, pattern, and cross-cultural influences.

SLOW LOOKING | AGENTS OF CHANGE: MARGARET FABRIZIO & KAWANDIS

Thursday, November 3 | 1-2pm PT
Online

Wonderful things happen when we slow down and engage deeply with works of art. Join us in an interactive session as we look closely at selected artworks from our exhibition Agents of Change: Margaret Fabrizio & Kawandis. The session will explore what we notice, wonder, and discover when we take the time to look closely and carefully.

Bring your curiosity as we practice engaging with two artworks and share our observations, perspectives, and questions, through a guided interactive program led by educator & teaching artist Suzanne Reich.

No prior experience of the curator's or artists' talks required.
