STRANGE ANGELS

Strange Angels Theater is a collaboration between two professional, seasoned theater artists, Elizabeth Gjelten and Christine Young. Elizabeth is a playwright, poet, teacher, community arts worker, and company playwright with 3Girls Theatre. Christine is an Associate Professor at the University of San Francisco and a theater director specializing in new plays about social issues affecting women’s lives. With a particular focus on stories by and about women, we have a successful track record of producing high-quality artistic projects in collaboration with community partners, in settings that bring unexpected groups of people together to share stories, build bridges, and stimulate dialogue. Strange Angels projects have included Hunter’s Point, a play about homelessness and mental illness (featured in the New York Times); Home/Cooking, a community arts project with formerly homeless, female-identified participants; and Everyone Deserves a Home, a roving interview/photography studio that grew into a multidisciplinary art exhibit about the lives of people living in supportive housing.

Our residency with Ruth’s Table will feature a production of Lay My Burden Down, a serious play with silly puppets about the burdens of trauma, racism, aging, death—and love. We also plan panel discussions, performance workshops, and other activities with the Ruth’s Table community.
