ONE WORLD: MORE BASKETS ON THE EDGE
Saturday, November 8, 2025 | 1:00–3:00 PM
Onsite | Free | Registration required, limited to 20 participants
Join artists Barbara Shapiro and Michele Hament for a hands-on basketry workshop inspired by the exhibition Baskets on the Edge. Together, we’ll create a collaborative globe-shaped sculpture titled One World: More Baskets on the Edge—a community artwork celebrating connection, heritage, and place.
Participants will each craft a personalized mini basket to “populate” a large hexagonal plaited globe created by Barbara Shapiro. Each basket can hold a small scroll noting either the country you or your family came from—or a place you dream of visiting—symbolizing the woven ties that connect us all.
Two ways to participate:
Barbara will guide participants in weaving small baskets using cane and map strips.
Michele will lead a parallel paper basket activity—easy to fold, glue, and decorate with markers—ideal for beginners.
All materials will be provided. Participants of all ages, abilities, and experience levels are welcome. Workshop participants are expected to stay for the full two hours in order to support the completion of this group project.
The completed globe, One World: More Baskets on the Edge, will be installed in the Ruth’s Table Gallery as part of the Baskets on the Edge exhibition.
