MONUMENTAL LEGACIES: PUBLIC SCREENING & EXHIBITION
Monday, October 6 | 4:30-7:00 PM
Onsite | Free
Celebrate the end of Summer with art, music, and community on Capp Street! This special evening features the public screening of Monumental Elegies, a youth-led, intergenerational project exploring monuments and legacy.
This summer, City Studio teens collaborated with 500 Capp Street, Ruth’s Table, Bethany Center, and Haight Street Art Center to ask: What does legacy mean across a lifetime? Whose stories should be remembered, and why? Together with residents of Bethany Center and Ruth’s Table program participants, students transformed these conversations into drawings, screen prints, and a collaborative 3D sculpture: Monumental Dreaming: City Studio’s Collaborative Ode to San Francisco. The sculpture weaves together iconic landmarks, natural landscapes, and personal reflections, embodying the city’s layered legacy as both a place of belonging and new beginnings.
In a culminating celebration, the finished sculpture was paraded down Capp Street by an intergenerational crew of artists, supporters, and revelers—including festive dancers led by Vanessa Mosqueda Velez, accompanied by Mixtiso on live percussion, and an affable group of clowns.
Join us for the screening of this video project, accompanied by the students’ artwork and reflections that capture the spirit of collaboration, memory, and creativity across generations.
